Getting blank page when emailing from backend

When I go to the backend and try to send an email to a contact, I go into a blank page.

Here's where I am.
1. I have the J! set to SMTP with username and password. I have tried both @ and + in the user name.
2. Same information in the civicrm configuration and added the password to settings file.
3. I even tried making my address the same as the configuration name.

When I try to send a mail, I get sent here:

/index2.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/contact/view/activity

but nothing loads and no activity is recorded.

Make sure you are sending mail to a valid email address. Also check your access logs. That might give you some idea about blank screen.

No errors. It isn't ever generating an error message, just showing a blank page.

This is bit weird behavior. Can you Enable Debugging  on  CiviCRM › Administer CiviCRM › Global Settings : Debugging and try if displays any error messages..

Debugging showed nothing.

just tried this on my my joomla_15 sandbox and it worked fine :(

You might want to check you apache error log to see if there is any errorrs reported there and also your mail log to see if there is any indication of a mail being sent there

Still happening. No errors indicated on error log. No activity recorded. No email.

Also, the email notifications are not being sent when profiles are submitted.

It is very odd, because the contact component in joomla! is working perfectly (from what I can tell--at least it is sending email). I have the exact same information in the civicrm configuration and the password in the front and back settings files.

It just goes to a blank page. The blank page shows no source. In IE 6 it says page cannot be found.

update:

of course, as soon as I posted it started working. I changed the server name to localhost and tada!
