I must be in a dense mood for I searched, read, played with the demo but for the life of me, Ican't figure out how to:

1. create an event with sub-events (e.g., conference with many sessions, each with a max sign-ups and wait list)

2. for the same event, people can sign up as volunteers, paid attendees, invited guests, etc.

Could someone please point me in the right direction, be it "hey civicrm can't do this ..."

Currently civicrm does not support sessions / sub-events.

You can expose Participant Role on registration page using Profile. ( http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Online+Registration )
