For the relationship start and end dates, the year drop-down selector on the date popup gives a choice from 20 yrs in the past and 20 yrs in the future. So, if I want a date in 1979 I can only go to 1989 and then I have to click the left arrow "Prev" button, month by month, until I get to 1979.

I think that 30-40 yrs in the past and 10 yrs in the future might be a more useful choice. Or, let users type the date manually.

user can define own range for these dates by changing 'Start Offset' and 'End Offset' for Date Class.
these dates are using "relative" Date Class.

Go to : Administer CiviCRM -> Global Settings -> Date Formats -> Advanced Date Input Settings -> Edit the 'Start Offset' and 'End Offset' for 'relative' Date Class.
now corresponding changes in date range will reflect on relationship form.

In your case these offsets value would be
1. 'Start Offset' : 30-40
2. 'End Offset' : 10

I couldn't find the 'relative' date class. I'm using CiviCRM 3.1 alpha2. It's not in the sandbox either (http://sandbox.civicrm.org). I tried the other classes and found that the 'searchDate' class is the one to adjust for relationship dates.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know those settings even existed!
