Troubleshooting payments - paypal ok, contact ok, contribution missing
November 25, 2009, 08:01:35 am
I've just set up a Paypal Standard payment processor and membership contributions page, but I'm getting odd behaviour I don't know how to diagnose.  I'm using Paypal's sandbox to test it.

1) I used my sandbox buyer account to sign up at a certain membership level via my CiviContribute page

2) The paypal transaction seemed to go ok.  My sandbox email showed my buyer received a receipt, and my seller received a new purchase notification.  My seller's sandbox account showed the transaction as being successfully completed.

3) The CiviCM log file seemed happy:
Nov 25 15:12:35  [info] Contribution record updated successfully
Nov 25 15:12:36  [info] Success: Database updated and mail sent

4) The contact record was created, and also the Drupal user account

5) The contact has no associated contribution record, and no membership

I don't know how to figure out what the problem is.  What would need to be failing to get this sort of behaviour?  Am I missing some obvious setting?  How can I troubleshoot further?

I'd really appreciate some help!

Thanks,
Jules

What is the URL that Paypal std is send to send it's IPNs (Instant Payment Notifications) to? Is it correctly accessing this url (check your apache log). Is the URL correct? You should be able to access it from your browser although you will get an error message when you correctly access it with no parameters (something about mode)

I think the "confusion" is that test contributions and memberships do NOT show up on the contact's contrib and membership tabs. (You said you were using the PP sandbox - so I'm assuming these are test-drive transactions.). You can find / verify them from Find Memberships and Find Contributions menu items  - check the "Find Test ..." checkbox in the search forms.

Oh wonderful, thank you!  It was indeed a test, and I didn't realise they wouldn't show up on the contact's tabs.  Now you've told me where to look, I can see them successfully there.  Great result, I'm so pleased it's working :-). Thanks!
P.S.  I'll add a note to the troubleshooting page on the wiki in a bit.
