IMAP is not available from my provider - civimail workarounds?
September 05, 2007, 02:05:41 pm
My site is finally up and running and everything is working perfectly except CiviMail. (Drupal and CiviCRM 1.8)  When I finally put my nose to the grindstone on it today, I discovered that IMAP is not available from my hosting provider (who I use for several other sites).  I really don't want to move to another provider if I can avoid it.  And it seems that fewer and fewer providers seem to offer IMAP at all without going to a dedicated server plan (which I don't have the skills to support).

1.  Is there any workaround for this so I can get it working on my own?

2.  Would the SMTP relay service from Shane solve this issue?

3.  Would the 1.9 release of civicrm using http processing eliminate the need for IMAP with the exception of bounce handling?

Thanks,

Stoic

1. No. The other solution requires amavisd et al, for which u need a dedicated server slice etc and is more complex

2. yes

3. yes. But depending on the size of your mailing list, bounce handling might be crucial

yes. But depending on the size of your mailing list, bounce handling might be crucial

After some thinking, I filed CRM-2256 so actually all the user-generated SMTP actions are mirrored over HTTP.

That said, we strongly suggest you do setup some sort of reverse email channel support (either with AMaViS or imap2soap), as you need to handle bounces somehow, really, to be considered a good netizen; bounce handling can’t be moved to HTTP (for obvious reasons).
