Integrating CiviEvents with Joomla
December 01, 2009, 02:53:24 pm
I was looking for many months for a component that can display all the iCal feeds from CiviEvent into a monthly display in our Joomla! CiviCRM install and I finally found it.

A little background:
  • The Google Calendar can be used but for display purposes only.  It doesn't work if you would like to show formatted event details and links on the description, is too basic
  • One of the best Joomla! calendars is JCalPro, but it lacks an integration option for iCal feeds.

I found Zap Calendar last week... this one really works fine. You can integrate as many iCal feeds as you wish and it displays the calendar with many different options. It comes with tons of additional plug ins but in my opinion the best part is that it integrated with Civic.

All you need to do is create as many Categories as you would like to display... then you have the option to display each category as a iCal feed or add the events manually.

I am launching the new calendar soon, but in the mean time, visit http://www.zapcalendar.com/

The only little problem is that is not free, but in my opinion is way worth it.

Aspagarino,
Thanks for the tip - I've been wrestling with the same thing. I'd like to give ZapCalendar a go but it's priced rather high so it would be great help to see it in action before buying.
Would you please share a link to the site you built with it and CiviCRM? Thanks much,

Pavel

Love IT.... you can see it here: http://energycenter.org/index.php/outreach-a-education/workshop-a-event-calendar

The CCSE events are coming straight from CiviCRM. In my opinion it is worth the investment ($100). I believe the new version of jCalPro is also capable of getting iCal feeds.

Thanks, Aspagarino, for the link. The site looks great and so does the calendar. I'm gonna give it a try and you may tell the boys at Z Content to give you some referral discount or something ;-)

This is great!

I will be implement this as well for a client.

Quick question though, on one of the registration pages, you had a Survey Question at the bottom of the registration page. Are you collecting those results and aggregating the totals are just tracking who selected which option.

We need to do a similar survey, but in the end it's not the who the client wants to see, but rather how many for each option in total.

Thanks!

Dallas

The survey is just for a workshop... each attendee has a record about How did he/she heard about the event. I am generating a report with an SQL statement with the totals... need to do it in Civic but right now I am pulling in from the MySql.

I just gave up waiting on JCal and paid for Zap Calendar. I am having a time problem with some external feeds not recognizing the UTC-5 time zone adjustment and I don't know how to set the ical feed properly for my internal CiviCRM events. I am using the url at the top of the event management dashboard that you see when you click on the ical icon, but the live event isn't being displayed in the ZCalendar: http://mattnye.com/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=5

Any help would be appreciated.

On the zip calendar try to put this one: http://mattnye.com/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/ical&reset=1&start=20090101

Change the start day to whatever you need... it will display events from the past if you do so.

Just realized I never replied to this. The time issue was a ZapCalendar issue which has been fixed. The feed worked using the URL you suggested. Thanks so much for the help!
