I have successfully gotten gotten the "user dashboard" to work for the frontend users. I was wondering if there was a way for the user in the dashboard or elsewhere to drop out of an event. Once they are registered, are they registered permanently unless someone on staff unregisters them for an event?

There is limited self-service cancellation functionality implemented in 3.0 - but only for participants who are in Pending from waitlist or Pending from approval status. The email they get when they come off waitlist or get approved to attend includes a link with a hash value which brings them to a simple form where they can either complete their registration or cancel it.

This flow could be extended at some point to support cancellation for other cases - with consideration given to cancellation of paid registrations etc. If you're interested in working on this or sponsoring this enhancement, you can ping us on IRC or ping me at dave at civicrm dot org.
