sending mails to an ad-hoc group of contacts
December 03, 2009, 08:40:27 pm
Is there any simple way to send an email to an ad-hoc group of contacts?  Currently you would have to create a group, attempt to give it some meaningful name, then create your mailing, then disable the group so as to not clutter the list.  This gets to a be a bit unwieldy if you do a handful of these every week.  It'd be nice if you could just select a few contacts and send them a mailing.

What would be required to make this happen?

If you mean by civimail then there is. Create a 'base group' which only needs to be a single record with an email address that won't bug anyone, then use Adv Search, grab your people, use More Actions >> Schedule/Send mass emailing >> select your basegroup

That fires you through the civimaiil process but just adds your contacts to a temp group or some such for purposes of keeping civimail happy

Is that what you need?

Weird.  That option isn't in 2.1, or 3.1, but it is in 3.0.  Wonder if that's a bug or what.

That was introduced in the 3.0 (really nice one).

As for the 3.1, are you using the sandox ? Might be that civimail isn't activated.

We're using CiviCRM 3.0.2 but I can't find 'base group' anywhere.  How to create such a 'base group'?

Note that there’s always the ‘Send Email to Contacts’ action on the contact search results screen (but it might not fit your needs, as it’s not CiviMail-based).

If it’s missing from 3.1 (with the same configuration as 3.0) then it’s a bug – but I do find the base group in my advanced search → Schedule/Send a Mass Mailing.

Simply create any mailing list group; then, after the advanced search action, you’ll see a ‘base group’ drop-down with all the mailing list groups to choose from.
