Mapping and proximity
December 07, 2009, 05:18:07 pm
Hi,

I'm looking to migrate an old system to CiviCRM however there is some functionality I am unsure about. The old system has a web component in which a part of it allows you to search on a postcode or suburb and also include surrounding suburbs. This is important functionality which I am attempting to replicate in CiviCRM for public accessible contact searches.

What I'd like to know is, can/does CiviCRM utilise the geo code mapping information to show which contacts are near each other? What I'm trying to achieve is I want to allow a user to search an area for contacts and then to pick a contact from a listing. At this time the searching is very good, but does not search neighbouring cities or postcodes.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

There is an in-built Custom Search based on Proximity = just based on x km by radius from the nominated spot. But it is a start you may be able to build on.

Thanks Peter :)

I noticed that shortly after posting, and also some brief instructions on updating contact geocode data via command-line scripting.

To clarify, what I'm trying to do is allow users to:
  • be able to search on name, suburb, state, postcode, custom data, etc
  • have an additional (optional) search function to include results in neighbouring suburbs

The issue is that a user may attempt to search using a suburb which does not contain any results. It's cases like these that we'd want to display any potential results nearby, just in case the user got the suburb slightly off.

Cheers.
