Membership Renewals

OK - that's cool.  A supplementary question then.  We have fixed membership periods (1st Jan to 31st Dec).  Say a member was current in 1st January to 31st December, 2009.  They now renew their membership for 1st Jan 2010 to 31st December, 2010.  When I look at their membership record, I see a single record with dates of 1st January, 2009 to 31st December, 2010.  Is this what I should expect?  It seems perfectly logical but I thought I might see two membership record for 2009 and separately 2010.

If I am not wrong  -
On renew membership we are updating existing record from civicrm_membership table,
you can check civicrm_membership_log which will point to two records, one for create and one for renew membership.
