Why does the civicrm.org website require a width of 1100 to not appear broken?

At a width of less than 1100px approx, the Demo and Donate buttons are moved to the next line and create an unattractive appearance.

According to this, 1/3 of people view the web on a resolution of 1024 or less on their monitor, and that's NOT considering that fact that many people with higher than 1024 width screens view webpages on a partially minimized browser window that doesn't take up the whole screen.

Why does the CiviCRM.org website do this?   The website makes what I call a "technical assumption" that "everyone has as big a screen as me" or more briefly "works on my machine".   FYI, I've directed prospective users to the CiviCRM.org website to introduce them to the project, and they respond with "the website looks broken."   Is this the impression the project wants to make on new users?

I vote that it should be corrected/redesigned.  The login block could easily be moved to someplace other than the menu bar, as well.

The advisory group is in the process of rebuilding the entire site. Standard screen widths will be taken into consideration.

Hi

Just checked on google analytics for  civicrm.org, only 12,19 % of the visitors have 1024, all the rest is higher. The visitors here seems to have higher than average screen size, not that unsurprisingly.

Not that we shouldn't aim at supporting these 12%.

Another stat, that came as surprise: 14,28 %    of the visitors are using internet explorer (62,50 % for Firefox).
Of the 14%, more than 55% are using ie8. ie7 is therefore less than 5% of the visitors, and ie 6 is 1.5% of the visitors.

I would recommend doing only for the standard and not even bother supporting ie7, and we can even afford to go svg and other goodies if needed.
