Oracle purchase of MySQL: is there a need to support Postgres?
December 14, 2009, 06:19:55 am
When Oracle bought Sun in the Spring of 2009 there were a bunch of stories about how this might impact the open source nature of MySQL. There were two responses: some people started looking more seriously at Postgres, as the open source db alternative to MySQL, thinking it could replace MySQL as the de facto standard in LAMP; the other was MariaDB, an initiative to ensure on an on-going basis that there was an open source version of MySQL. (http://www.indicthreads.com/4337/will-oracle-buy-lead-to-migrations-from-mysql-to-postgresql/)

I haven't followed this discussion at all since the initial news. Has the worry about MySQL's future as properly open source in its future under Oracle been laid to rest? As there hasn't been much continuing hubbub, I'm imagining this is so. If not, is there a need for CiviCRM to consider supporting Postgres in some future release?

Just asking...

Cheers,
Joe

Joe:

if you think it is important that CiviCRM consider supporting another platform, might be good for you step up and get a group of folks from the community who have the same itch and basically figure out whats missing and what we can do to make things better and more database agnostic.

We are definitely willing to work with best practice guidelines and modify our development practices. But someone interested in this needs to step up from the community and help lead the project.

Interested members may look at http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,14103.0.html for my experiment with PostgreSQL.
