We created a new custom group of fields and attached (i.e. the "Used for" selection box) that to the contribution page AND to the contribution_type of "Donation".  When entering a new donation, the custom group appeared as soon as the contribution type of "Donation" was selected.  However, for a new contribution all data entered in those custom fields was not saved.  If an existing contribution was edited, however, the data in the custom fields was saved.  To get around this, we had to recreate the custom group and attach it to the contribution page but NOT to a contribution type (leave that select as "Any").  The custom group then appears as soon as the new contribution page is called and the data is saved along with the new contribution.  I believe this is a bug.

It would be very helpful to be able to change the "Used for" for an existing group of custom fields rather than having to delete and recreate them.

I just tried it on the 3.1 sandbox - added a custom group and field attached to contributions and only "Donation" as a type.  It worked fine.  The only difference other than the release (we're on 3.0) is that we have only one Contribution Type (Donation), so I changed the sandbox to exactly match our situation and again it worked perfectly.  I changed the sandbox back to the way I found it and deleted the test contribution that I had made.  Looks like this is no longer a problem!
