Event Wizard/Tabs

When creating a new event, you are asked to save each tab before advancing to the next. But clicking save returns you to the same tab. So it's a two-click process -- save, then go to the next tab. I think the user should either be able to walk through all tabs and save once, or the "save" button should be "save and next" or "save and continue" or maybe just "continue". As it currently stands, we seem to be stuck somewhere between the old wizard form and a totally flexible tab form.

perhaps related to this comment - http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,11306.msg48580.html#msg48580 where i was suggesting a re-order so we can get through the required 5 screens and then opt out of the rest (though 'membership' isn't really a 'required' screen either eg

1 title

2 amounts

3 membership

4 profiles

5 thanks - then be able to select 'complete' or 'continue to' the following ones

6 tell

7 premiums

8 widget

9 enable PCP (should just be PCP)

Hey Brian - This interface was implemented back in 3.0 (so not new in 3.1). The 'idea' is that given the Event Template feature, many folks won't need to step through each form and hence we don't force them to do so by automatically advancing to the next tab. We could potentially add another button - 'Save and Next' - but I'd like to hear from more folks / integrators about their users' experiences before we change this again. Would also be interested in seeing examples of how other web apps solve this problem (process with multiple optional steps).

Peter - Seems like you are referring to the Contribution Page 'wizard' and not Events?? There's an item on the roadmap to 'de-wizardize' both that interface and the Mailing (CiviMail) interface (at some point). We can revisit the order of tabs at that point (and potentially revisit the best approach for improving the 'tab-based' interface.

Yeah, I know we had introduced the tabs for events in 3.0, so this may not be different. But I think it needs improvement.

I'm definitely supportive of the tabs. However, I think either:
- the user should be able to flip between all tabs and only save once, or
- clicking save should advance to the next tab (at which point they can continue to flip)

The tabs are intended to improve usability, but in their current state, I'm not sure they do. Standard use -- I need to interact with 4 of the 5 tabs. So I go to the first. Click save. Click second tab. Edit. Click save. Click third tab. Edit. Click save...

After editing each tab, I have to save and reload, and then advance to the next tab. While it's great to flip between the tabs *after* an event is already setup, when you're first creating an event, this workflow is +1 click for each tab over the previous wizard based workflow (where I edited and clicked next).

I think the preferred solution is that the user can flip between the tabs all they want, and only needs to save once they're done configuring. This is standard on the web, and provides the most flexibility.

The 'save all tabs' approach seems like a reasonable option to explore in 3.x. We don't have a 'widget' in our toolbox that does this yet - but as we gain experience / expertise w/ jQuery stuff it should be do-able. We have taken a step in 3.1 which helps in this - having an alert to warn users if they change form values and then take an action that navigates away from the form w/o saving.
