Import process will not pass step 2
December 18, 2009, 01:56:32 am
I'm volunteering for a non-profit trying to migrate a very messy Access database. I'm currently trying to import contact from a .csv. The contacts are all non-US residents. I've configured CiviCRM to accept all international addresses. When I get to step 2 of the import process, I match the .csv fields to standard CiviCRM fields. I then click "Continue". The page takes about 30 seconds to load. When it does, it simply reloads the same page. I've made a test .csv with mock domestic contacts, and it imported perfectly. Any help would be appreciated.

Bit strange. How many records to do have? Can you try to split your .csv file into multiple csv's  and try to import.

I've tried splitting, removing uncommon fields. Nothing works.

At one time I had trouble importing and the issue was the php memory limit (civiCRM wants 128mb and Thinkhost has a default limit that is much lower).  Eventually I worked out I was only able to import 15 records at a time, which is a slow way to import a 2,000 record list!  I worked with my host to relax my limits overnight and that did the trick.
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!

I am having the same difficulty with import, I have split the database and my host provider has increased my memory size and still getting stuck,  Any ideas?

you might want to try on our demo site : http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

If you attach sample data file ( .csv ) here, that would be helpful to debug.
( Of course any private / personal info should be disguised.  )

I am running into the same issue. Trying to import a file that is about 620kb. Keeps returning me to Step 2.

1. check the log in files/civicrm/upload/CiviCRM.log
it usually has useful information if something goes wrong.

2. if you've got server issues - try setting yourself up a development environment and doing the import there, and then just loading the database on your server  [not a great solution w/ a live site though].

3. consider changing your server to one that gives you more access/memory. This might be just the beginning of your hassles ...

Hi,

I've got the same problem (15 row limit on my .csv file)  I've tried using UTF 8 encoding and the regular encoding for a .csv while saving from Excel.  My hosting provider has upped our memory limit with no effect.  I didn't think it would as our .csv file is really small (491kb).  Moreover, I've just reproduced the behaviour on the demo site.  It's only recognizing the first 15 records.  Tried all the available duplicate checking options to see if that would do anything but no effect.

Any ideas what might be causing this limiting reaction?

Update on problem (solved for me anyway)
February 18, 2010, 05:04:23 pm
Updating the last post, for me it turned out to be a problem with excel's .csv export.  I was exporting from access to Excel 97-2000 and checking the data by opening it in Excel and then saving as a .csv.  That was the problem - civicrm didn't like the .csv created  by Excel (even if I later opened or pasted it into a Notepad and saved again using UTF8 encoding).  So I exported the tables from Access directly as a .csv (you can also encode in Access directly as UTF8).

If you aren't exporting from Access recommend downloading Open Office and using the spreadsheet in there - civicrm had no problems of limiting imports when using a .csv file from Open Office either.

Hope this helps someone!

I concur - client had same problems but we don't as we use NeoOffice. For them it was odd characters such as accents tripping the system up since it was not utf-8

Unfortunately it did not fucntion to me. I tried to import it from a joomla virtuemart user table using a variety of options, including CSV from the phpmyadmin export option , without success.
Amazingly, civicrm did not recognize the "," and give me a message of error with the citation of "too long" name.
This name is the first head row, without the recognition of the
Code: [Select]
,The codification of joomla original base is latin1-swedish-ci
Any permition issue can be related to that?
I would appreciate so much for help.
