Fields in Mailing Labels
September 10, 2007, 01:17:37 am
Hi,

I just realized that I can't add any other fields to the mailing lables than the one that are primarily defined. Is this correct? I need the organisation field. It often happens that many organisations are in the same building. Therefore it would be wise to be able to put the organisation name with the label.

Many thanks,

Damien

Yes that is correct. Ideally we should use the civimail "token" based system in all places including mailing label (where we expose name / address / custom fields etc as tokens) and I suspect we'll do that in a 2.x release

Damien:

To display Organization Name you need to add token {contact.name}.  Help tooltip will list you all available tokens.

Hi Kurund,

I'm afraid Lobo has the right explanation. Your solution is correct for Organisation as a contact but I was asking about including the organisation to which the contact belongs.

Thanks anyway to both of you. I'm looking forward to version 2.0.

By the way, I always write it when I can: your work is awesome!

As a temporary solution to this problem I've found that I can include the organization name as the Supplemental Address #1 or 2, and then change the mailing label format so that that shows up after the contact name.  It's a little more inputting into the individual contact files, but works wonderfully afterwards!

I finally used the same workaround but it's far from being elegant.

Is this still a problem in the current release. I haven't had to do such a mailout yet but if I do it will cause major problems.

Other option would be if a could specify that when adding a contact to a group, I could specify which address to use, and thereby make up another address that has this workaround in it, then when I want to do a mailout i can set up groups that specify it should use the 'mailing' address which would include the organisational Name and Dept in Address1.

If the question is ... "can you include values from related contacts - e.g. my employer's organization name - in a mailing label" - the answer is (drum-roll) YES starting in 2.1.

The specific issue for this (marked as resolved for 2.1) is http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-2968 (item 4).
