Sometimes when a profile field is edited, this error occurs.

* Cannot add or update profile field "Contribution" with combination of Household or Organization or any subtypes of Household or Organisation.

What is triggering this error?

I have found that if I remove all the fields, and then rebuild the profile from the beginning this problem doesn't occur. It may be related to the fact that there are "Individual" data fields combined with "Contributors" and "Custom" data fields in the same profile.

Please advise.

Right, you cannot have mix profile. ie Individual + Contribution data. Profile edit mode does not support mix profile.

Is that a permanent condition? It would be nice to blend even in edit mode.

yes it is

if this is important to you consider contributing code to address the issue and/or hiring a developer to extend the system to handle a few of these conditions
