changelog search (under advanced search) broken?

I've tried to use the "changelog" portion of the advanced search to no avail. specifically, searching in the "modified by" field. no matter what I put in the "modified by" field the search finds zero people. same thing on the demo.civicrm.org site.

how does one use this feature, or does it even work?

Hmm - I logged in to demo site and edited a contact record (Dr. Yadav - http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/contact/view?reset=1&cid=54). I also edited the demo user's own contact record to add first and last name (Jane Demouser).

Then entered 'demouser' in Advanced Search - Modified By. I got the expected 2 records.

Can you describe exact steps you're taking where this is not working for you. Also, you can view the changelog entries for any contact by clicking 'View Change Log' in the lower right hand corner of each Contact Summary page. This can help you verify what has been recorded (and therefore what should be searchable in Adv Search).

I figured out how to reproduce your success  :)

if I'm not mistaken, the "modified by" field requires you to search by the (name) of the person who modified the record, in (lastname), (firstname) order.

all of the following failed when tested for Jane Demouser today on demo.civicrm.org :
  • search by (firstname)(lastname)
  • search by drupal username*
  • search by e-mail address
  • search by (lastname)(firstname) with no comma
*to test this i changed Jane Demouser's name to Jane Dem0user, with a zero in the name
