1) I have set up a few custom fields to become part of a custom profile. The "field help" I set up when creating the custom fields is not showing up on the profile, however. I have to re-do the "field help" in the profile itself. Is this expected behavior?

2) I seem to recall that in an earlier version of CiviCRM, you could set up a custom field to be a memo or blob field, or to at least give the user a deeper box into which he could input instructions. That no longer seems to be the case. Am I misremembering, doing something wrong or what?

1) yes, i think that's right. The first help is intended for administrators, and second one is usually for the public who are modifying their own record, so usually you'd want the message to be different.

2) i think it's called 'Notes', it's there.
