Is the data in civicrm_membership_log actually used by the application at all? Or does it only exist for auditing purposes, to log changes made to membership records? I noticed that table is getting pretty large, and was considering backing up and purging.

I'm about 99% sure that this table is only there for the possibility of auditing membership changes (as Brian noted). I did some quick experiments truncating the table and don't see any effects at all in the interfaces (dashboard, find members, reports, new membership ....).
