Contacts not added automatically to Smart Groups

Hi - 

I may be confused about how smart groups are supposed to work.  I thought that contacts would be automatically added to a smart group, but it seems like the group needs to be refreshed.   I have reproduced this both on my own site and on http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org.   Is this the way it is supposed to work?  If so, is there a way to run a cron job that does this refresh? 

Here are the steps to reproduce:

Create a new smart group with criteria :First Name LIKE 'a%' ...AND...Contact Type - 'Individual'.  The test group on the demo site is called "a test"

Add a new contact with First Name = "abcd"

Choose Manage Groups and look at the members of the smart group. Note the new contact is not listed.

Click "Edit Smart Group Search Criteria for [a test]" Note the new contact is now listed.

[as of right now I have not clicked "Edit Smart Group Search Criteria" so "abcd" is in the database but not in the smart group.

On a related note, I have created the following scenario on the 3.1 demo site:

1.) Create smart group based on an active relationship
2.) Delete or Inactivate (via the end date) the relationship
3.) The contact is NOT removed from the smart group

Also, when I manually add contacts to the group, they do not generally appear in the smart group.  I manually added a contact, then searched for contacts in the group, and the new contact did not show up.  However, if I go tot he "Manage Groups" page, then to "Members," then click on the "Added" status, that contact will show up.

Hope this helps resolve the bug.  We would love to use this functionality.

Can you give more details about your smart group criteria. (If possible smart group url on http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org)

Hello- does anyone know if this bug has been fixed yet?  My company uses SmartGroups constantly- we recently upgraded to version 3 and the fact that this now doesn't work is killing us!  I wish I was a programmer so that I could contribute to fixing the bug... but I'm not  :-\

Hi -  Just added the following to the demo:

1.) Created individual contact "Joe Volunteer"
2.) Created org contact "Volunteer Org"
3.) Added relationship "Joe Volunteer" Volunteers for "Volunteer org"
4.) Created Smart Group "Volunteers - Active" based on relationship volunteers for "Volunteer org"
5.) Joe Volunteer shows up in this Smart Group
6.) Created individual contact "Jane Volunteer", also with the relationship Volunteers for "Volunteer org"
7.) Jane Volunteer DOES NOT show up in the Smart Group

Hope this helps.  Please let me know if you need further input.

The issue has been fixed for the upcoming 3.0.4 release - due out soon (this week or next).
