Profile form with email only changes display name

If I set up a profile with only an email field to sign up for a newsletter, when I fill in the form with the email of an existing contact the contact's display name is set to the email address. The first and last names are not erased and the display name can be restored by edit/save the record. Tried with and without "Update contact on duplicate match" and on 2 different sites.

This is not desired behaviour. Is it a bug or am I missing something?

Can you reproduce this on demo, and if so file an issue. I thought we had trapped and fixed this issues, guess not :( We'll fix this for 2.0
