Is it possible to use organization based custom profiles in membership signup pages?

Basically I want people on my site to be able to pay their membership dues for their organization and fill out pertinent organization data (which is part of a custom profile that extends organizations, not contacts.) However, these custom profiles do not show up as options in the "Add profile" dropdowns.

unfortunately not

we do have the "on behalf of organization" feature where we collect a fixed set of information. Would be great to change that to a profile and allow folks to extend that with whatever makes sense for their org. This would make a great community contribution and/or sponsorship. I suspect it will take between 75-100 hours
