I new to using CiviEvent and still experimenting with what the system can do. This is probably something simple and I'm missing it but, when registering a participant for an event, at the confirmation screen when I click the register button, the form says processing, but never goes to the Thank You screen. When I go and check the event, the participant is registered.

Any ideas?

I was able to reproduce it on the demo server. It seems to be a problem with SMTP for the confirmation email... It works fine if I turn the email off.

(The event is titled New Member Tea)

I changed the smtp settings to localhost and it worked fine.

I noticed that you had changed the smtp server to smtp.gmail.com, port 465 with auth yes. But you could not add the password (to the civicrm.settings.php file, since you dont have access to that file). So that setting was invalid. Kinda sucks that the SMTP package just hangs there for a long time (forever?) rather than returning some sort of error
