Installing CiviCRM 3.0.x on Dreamhost - Help please
January 10, 2010, 02:40:09 pm
Hey guys,
I'm new to CiviCRM but not Joomla!.  I've been having fits for two days trying to install this on my Dreamhost package.  It's installed in the past with no problems.

I went through the steps of installing from a directory (yes, the package is unzipped) and all I get is a 404 error.  I've tried a couple different versions and nothing.

I'm running...
Joomla! 1.5.15
PHP - 5.2.6
mySQL - 5.0.67-log
Webserver: Apache

I would install the turnkey package from Polestar but I'm using a quickstart installation from TemplatePlazza with everything already installed... modules, video players, and all that.

Any ideas?

So at the point you click the install button, you're getting the 404?
Can you go to Help > System Info and make sure your directory permissions are writable.
I almost think a 404 is more an indication of a problem with the J installer tool, rather than the Civi package. Can you try installing another extension and make sure it's working?

Thanks for hitting me back...

Yeah, I've been installing extensions all day but CiviCRM is the only one I've needed to install from the directory as opposed to browsing my local machine. And it doesn't happen right away... it cooks for a little while (30 seconds or so) and then it gives me the standard Joomla 404 with the box around it.

As for permissions... I set everything to 777 and did the whole recursive thing which means I'm wide open but the site isn't live yet.

Any other ideas?

Check your php memory_limit setting. Should be 32mb at a minimum.
It's possible the machine is timing out during install (though that usually yields a whitescreen, not a 404).

Where did you upload and unpack the civi package, from which you're now installing from directory?

Well I had a hard time uploading and THEN unzipping the package so I unzipped it THEN uploaded all the files into a folder in the tmp directory.  I put the full string in that's required including the tmp/com_civicrm folders.

Where would I find the PHP_limit setting?

My experience on Thinkhost, which is fairly similar to DreamHost is that Joomla simply could not install civiCRM the normal way.  I had to FTP the files into place in the administrator directory and install a subset of files with the Joomla installer.  There are precise directions for this around somewhere, although I couldn't find them with a quick search, you probably can.  Lots of people have struggled with this issue, for instance: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,4433.0.html

But I gotta tell you - I don't think it's worth it.  I struggled along with ThinkHost for a long time, but they just didn't have the capacity I needed in terms of resources and support.  What I hear is similar for DreamHost.  I just switched to civiHosting.com and the difference is really dramatic.  I'm really pleased so far.  They are $15 a month, but consider that your website is mission-critical to what you are doing and in the scheme of things, extra server costs are small and worth the benefit.  Now's the time to think about this, before you get to far into it.
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!
