Quote for mobile interface and Thunderbird plugin
January 12, 2010, 12:31:03 pm
I'm working for a non-profit organization and we are considering adopting CiviCRM. There are two features we would really like and I would like to get an estimate of cost to sponsor the development.

1. Mobile interface - Our staff are often on the go and would need limited access to contact records from a iPhone or other mobile web device. It would be a simple, minimalist web page suited for small screens. At this point I think we would only need to be able to search contacts, basic editing (including custom fields), viewing and posting activities.
2. Thunderbird plugin - We would like a Thunderbird plugin that could add a contact to CiviCRM (based on an email's FROM headers) and to add an email message to a contact's activity list.

Ideally, we would like these features to be adopted into the core of CiviCRM so they are maintained in the future. Can someone give us a rough quote for these features?

both these additions will be great and really enhance the power of CiviCRM.

If i had to take a random guess, i suspect 1 is approx 150-200 hours of work at least (a lot of it is basically getting upto speed on the mobile platform). Using something like PhoneGap (http://phonegap.com/) might help reduce the startup time :)

the thunderbird integration is probably 75-125 hours. if we find a good similar example, we could potentially mimic it and reduce overall development time

Thanks, Donald. What would be the cost per hour?

Do you think a web based mobile interface to CiviCRM will be less expensive than developing an app? For security reasons, we would rather have a web based solution rather than syncing and storing data on the mobile device itself. vTiger has a web interface for mobile devices that resembles what we want http://www.vtiger.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=208&Itemid=183 (Screenshots in a pdf here: http://forge.vtiger.com/frs/download.php/756/Mobile-1.0.pdf)

SugarCRM and vTiger both have Thunderbird plugins to help get an idea of how it works. http://www.sugarforge.org/projects/thunderbird/ http://www.vtiger.com//index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=129&Itemid=181
