We set up an event which folks have been registering for, in fact I just registered myself in order to test the system. The event is not listed in the event management page. We sorted by a broad range of dates and still no event. The event is tonight.... Help

This is a Joomla 1 install with civicrm 2.0.3

Did you try selection 'search all or by date range' and putting % in Find or leaving it blank.

Have you tried just stepping through the ID numbers ie /civicrm/event/manage?action=update&id=3&reset=1 - and then change 1 to 2 etc
