Import will only do 15 people at a time
January 14, 2010, 06:26:29 pm
I experienced a 15 user limit on uploads when trying to import about 150 new contacts. I'm running CiviCRM 3.0.1 in Drupal 6.15.  Everything seemed to work in terms of dealing with duplicates and such, but only 15 records would go at a time. I would delete the top 15 rows in the spreadsheet and try again, and each time it would take the first 15 records and then stop without error.

Puzzling, yes, as I haven't had problems in the past, prior to my most recent CiviCRM update, if I'm recalling correctly. Another user, working in a Joomla install, reports the same problem here:

you might want to try on our demo site : http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/

If you attach sample data file ( .csv ) here, that would be helpful to debug.
( Of course any private / personal info should be disguised.  )

At one point I too was trying to do an import and found that it was limited to 15 at a time.  In that case it turned out to be that the memory limit was set too low.  Raising it, with the cooperation of my host, fixed the problem.
Thanks to those who help create and enhance civiCRM!

Excel / Microsoft .csv files could be your culprit
February 18, 2010, 05:02:56 pm
Hi,

I also had this problem and asked our host to increase memory but it didn't change anything.  I also increase memory alloted in the civicrm settings.php file but that also didn't solve it.

For me it turned out to be a problem with excel's .csv export.  I was exporting from access to Excel 97-2000 and checking the data by opening it in Excel and then saving as a .csv.  That was the problem - civicrm didn't like the .csv created  by Excel (even if I later opened or pasted it into a Notepad and saved again using UTF8 encoding).  So I exported the tables from Access directly as a .csv (you can also encode in Access directly as UTF8).

If you aren't exporting from Access recommend downloading Open Office and using the spreadsheet in there - civicrm had no problems of limiting imports when using a .csv file from Open Office either.

Hope this helps someone!

I note also that the import return a fatal error on the last step.  However, the records did upload.

For what it's worth, this solution solved my problem as well.  I had opened/saved the CSV in Excel (which I believe writes odd end of line formatting or something), and when importing to Civi, was only allowed chunks of 15 contacts at a time.

I opened it again in OpenOffice and saved it as the default CSV format - voila!  Imported the whole list.

Had the same problem as described in this thread.

Opening Excel spreadsheets in OpenOffice.org and exporting them from OpenOffice to a .csv file did the trick for me.

I had known there was an issue with encoding and line endings. My workflow ALREADY included opening the .csv file in TextMate and "saving as" with the appropriate encoding and line endings. So I thought I had that issue settled. But apparently not because opening and exporting from OpenOffice is what solved it.

Confirming we have been hitting the above - wasn't sure if it was taking the spreadsheet from G Docs, or from G Docs via XL.
NeoOffice seems to cope.
