Not sure what you mean by 'no direct upgrade.' I am following the directions at http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Upgrading+CiviCRM+on+Joomla!?decorator=printable

I mean you need to modify some files manually, which is mentioned in the below documentation

I realize that (ie. configure.php etc.). My question pertains to Step 6. of those instructions [ 6. Install the latest CiviCRM codebase, using the Install from Directory option. Point it to the directory HOME ]. Not sure which file/folder they are talking about when describing the

Installed but back to square 1 with Joomla component installer error. Very frustrating.

If you have the budget you might want to consider hiring someone from the professional services list, http://civicrm.org/professional/ to help you out with the issue.

For small projects, I'd recommend Web Access India
