Fatal error when editing Contacts

I'm collecting contact information through an online event registration.

If I try to manually edit the information, whether I add new information or not, if I click Save I am redirected to this:

Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

Fuzzy rule for Individual does not exist

What does that mean and how do I fix it?

Note: even if I do this with contact information collected through other methods than the event registration, the same thing happens.

You might want to set up fuzzy rule for "Individual" in Administer ā†’ Manage ā†’ Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/deduperules?reset=1&action=browse

You probably have changed the level from Fuzzy to Strict.

Alright, so now it tells me a non recoverable error is occurring, but this time it's because a strict rule for individual doesn't exist.

I'm running CiviCRM 2.2.7. Is that why I'm having so many issues?

2.2.7 is no longer supported. please upgrade to 3.1.1
