Field types via plugins

I'm not sure how Drupal's CCK works, but most of the Joomla CCK extensions use the idea of extensible plugins to handle field types. This model can generate some enthusiasm in the community for advanced or very specific types of field types. For example, a field type to display and stream a youtube video, or stream an audio file. This model might be something for Civi to consider down the road. The existing field types cover quite a bit, but the structure is not really geared toward extensibility. Just an idea.

yes, we need to work a bit more on extensibility and allow pluggable fields etc. drupal cck supports this quite nicely also :P
