Why is Php 5.2 required?
January 31, 2010, 04:58:53 am
This should be for all installations, not just Joomla, so please feel free to move to another section if appropriate.

I am running CentOS Linux 5.4 which has Php 5.1.6. The release version of CentOS 5.4 does not have a 5.2 version. Of course one can install 5.2, but that isn't part of the supported release.

Anyway, running the CiviCRM 3.1 beta, I haven't yet seen any issues, but I didn't test all features or components.

So, what specifically requires Php 5.2, rather than 5.1.6? If it's not required, then the online documentation should be updated for this.

there are a few PHP 5.2 (and at least one PHP 5.2.1) functions that we use, hence the requirement

you will run into issues eventually.
one element is that civi uses JSON format in a number of areas, and makes use of the php 5.2 function to transform some data, which doesn't exist in 5.1.x
