dojo.js:10422 error (group view)

I'm trying to update a real old installation to the newest drupal with civicrm. The website is using civicrm groups a lot. Starting with civicrm 1.6 I get this error when I click on the group tab on a profile page (the page hangs):

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

It only happens with users that are entered to a group as well as being removed from one or more groups. When someone is only added and never removed, the error doesn't exists.
I tried to upgrade to 1.7 but that won't remove the error. Would it be better to fix the error before doing the rest of the upgrade, or would it be smarter to just update and think about errors when I'm on civicrm3?

You should upgrade to latest stable release rather than 1.7. This is hard for us to support old versions of CiviCRM

Note that we also removed Dojo in CiviCRM 3.0, so the particular issue may ‘fix itself’ by upgrading. :)

thank you, that's enough information for me. I just wanted to make sure that I can proceed with upgrading, even if there's a problem.
