Merge by ID

Is it safe to go to this page w/o going through the dedupe process setting the ids in the qstring?: http://[my domain]/civicrm/contact/merge?reset=1&cid=123&oid=234&action=update&rgid=8

It's pretty common for me to discover a duplicate, so I know that say "The Cool Corp"  at id # 123 is the same a "Cool Crop"  at id#234.   Right now the only way I know how to merge these is to edit the name on one to be more similar to the other and then run a deduplicate and merge.

In 3.1 we have added Batch "Merge Contacts", so basically you can search for "The Cool Corp" and then select both contact and use batch action.

Am I correct in that this "batch" merge actually will only merge two records at a time?  Import failed many times without telling me that it had actually added "some" of the records. My import was about 4000 records, about 1+ megabyte in size. I had to break it up into sets of about 250 records, which still failed sometimes.

That's as background to explain that I have duplicates of virtually 98% of the records, and triplicates or more of perhaps 100 records.

Is there a script that I could run to just delete duplicates, based, say, on the primary email address?

Failing that, is there a script that will remove ALL contacts from CiviCRM without removing my Joomla registered users?

Thanks
