How many databases?
February 07, 2010, 10:17:32 pm
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Drupal+Installation+Guide says:
Quote
CiviCRM may be configured to use your existing Drupal database, or a separate (new) database. Using a separate database is generally preferred - as it makes backups and upgrades easier.
I guess my question is "how much easier?". My hosting provider charges a monthly rate on the number of DBs we have. We already run Drupal, and back up the Drupal DB. So can someone explain the fine print on this comment? What is the cost?

It's generally desirable to have separate databases.  It makes upgrading easier.  This is how you would want your live production site to be if you were to actually use it on your real website.

Putting everything into one database is fine if you're just trying it out to see how it works.

Why do you find two databases easier than one? Why do you find it makes upgrading easier? I'm guessing you have a really cool clever process that beats my backup-it-up, upgrade & hope process hands down.

It sure sounds like having two DBs makes REMOVING civicrm easier. Not that anyone would want to do that.
