Newsletter subscribe credits

We have been successfully using civiMAIL to send out newsletters to our members, we are looking to increase the number of newsletter subscribers by offering "credits"  to current subscribers who get new people to sign-up.  I've taken a look at civiCONTRIBUTE of course,  but I dont think its practical to get all the subscribers to set up a personal contribution campaign.  Is it possible to send out a newsletter such that each subscribers has a unique code that can be passed on to their friends which when they subscribe is tracked,  so that at the end of the promotion period we can count how many new subscriptions have been generated by the existing subscriber?
