Fatal Error on membership renewal

I receive an "unexpected" fatal error on membership renewals.  No explanation give.  Any ideas?  Backtrace below:

further info...

This error occurs on a user-initiated membership contribution ONLY.  Admin-initiated membership additions/renewals process without error.  Event registrations with payments also process without error.

This did not exist in 3.0, nor, I think, 3.1beta6.  It is a 3.1.1 issue.
