Why can't a contact have two "Home" addresses, for example? The data structure will allow it. Why does the application prevent it?

no specific reason. no one has requested it before :) if important to you, please consider checking the code and filing a patch

personally, i dont think its too common a use case, and if i had to guess, more folks would make an error and repeat the same location type rather than someone having two locations of the same type. Creating a location type called Home and Home Secondary is not a big deal, IMO. I dont have any stats to back this assertion :)
