Online registration for Event and in Drupal/CiviCRM issues with profiles?

I have setup an event, and two special profiles for registration (1 for contacts and 1 for other guests), allowing multiple registration with same email.
It works apparently well for users who are already registered and logged-in, but not for others (anonymous).
I setup the profile making drupal registration mandatory, and all the fields are of the "Individual" type, including custom data.
It looks like the data is not captured from the first screen, then users are presented with a second screen that has the regular Drupal/CiviCRM registration profile (and has most of the same fields). This is confusing to them, and they might not complete the registration or there might be another issue.
1- Is there a better way to streamline this process?
2- Reading the documentation, it mentions that profiles for online registration should be of type "Participants", but most if not all the fields i need are of type "Individual", and it says also that a profile cannot mix both types. Is this part of the problem? What is the solution?

Alan, Want to post some screenshots? And are we talking latest version which allows you to put different profiles for the Primary and subsequent Participants?

Using version 3.1.2
Step 1 is visitor's screen to register
Step 2 is screen filled-up with test data
Step 3 is next screen, asking for same site registration data. most people get confused and stop there, but actually nothing is registered then.

I tried several times to add files as attachment, but first it tells me they are too large (your limit is set at a very small 32K) and then that I have already posted even though it did not save the reply...

Is there a better way to do the setup or is this a bug?
