Need a way to sort mailing labels by postal code IN CiviCRM....
February 15, 2010, 03:10:01 pm
Hi,

I need to find a way to sort mailing labels by postal code instead of last name. This is required in the US for bulk mailing and many of our users are older volunteers who are in no way capable of doing mail merges every time they want to send out a mailing.

Does anyone have any idea how I could get labels to sort by zip?

Any ideas would be marvelous.

Cheerio,

I think the mailing labels will sort by postal code if you sort the search results that way before selecting the 'Mailing Labels' action (clicking on that column header in search results).

I did try that, however it doesn't have any effect. (at least not in 3.0.4 or the online demo version)

I just did this on the public Drupal / Civi 3.1 demo (link above):

1. Search -> Find Contacts, just clicked Search to get all hundred plus contacts in demo DB
2. Clicked Postal Code column top of search results to sort by Postal code
3. Selected 'all' on page 1
4. action -> Mailing Labels

--- pdf has addresses sorted ascending by postal code (first 20-ish don't have addresses, then remaining do sort)

One potential issue is that you can't do more than one (browser) page of search results at a time - so ultimately mail merge might be your best option.

If other folks have experience with this - would be great to hear from you !!

Column sorting has a bug for 3.0.x
I have reported it here:
http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,11808.msg50797.html#msg50797
There a a lot of JS-errors. As I cannot pin-point them exactly I didn't file a bug yet.
But maybe I should.
(In the related discussion I pointed-out that not having a sandbox for 3.0.x makes it difficult to test the system on "neutral" ground. But I agree with Lobo that you can not support two versions at the time)
Regards Joop
