The infamous "you do not have permission to execute this url" message.

Joomla 1.0.12
PHP 4.4.7
Apache
CiviCRM 1.8.10954

I seem to have successfully installed CiviCRM in this system, users have been added to groups which have been given various permissions.  My own account is an Administrator in Joomla and seems to have similar permissions in CiviCRM.  Control and modification from the Back End seem completely successful.

I added a menu item in the Joomla Main Menu, "link to component", pointing at CiviCRM, and made it Public and Published.

Whenever I or anybody else clicks on that menu item, we get the aformentioned "no permission to execute" message and an otherwise blank screen.

I have hunted through both the Joomla and CiviCRM fora and any documentation that I can get my hands on, but, although I have seen similar issues, nothing that stops users as completely as this.

What did I do wrong?

Thanks,
Brian

OK.  What I did wrong was misunderstand what the "CiviCRM" menu item was for.

When I went back into the menu editor, I found again ( I had seen the parameters block before ) that only certain functions can be performed from the Front End, and I need to choose one and enter the appropriate values to make it work.
