Survey: has any of you opening rate above 25% ish ?
February 23, 2010, 12:49:36 am
Hi,

As the number of emails read is calculated using a webbug, and that all the major mail clients don't display it by default, I get a rate that is hopefully not in line with the reality.

Beside showing a misleading result, I have anecdotes of sending being more seen as spam when you try to track opening. Is this the same for you ?

We have very low rates for opening because most email clients are now blocking the tracking.  I've been tempted to send and email that just asks people to click on a link to test our system so see what the true rate is.

Do you have any idea about how we can sensibly track opens? (Personally I don’t like the whole idea of tracking opens, but I couldn’t think of anything else than the webbug images anyway.)

Also, any sensible documentation patches that inform people that this is not very reliable are most welcome. :)

My general idea is that what happens between me and my mailbox should stay there (well, and google and its advertisers, but that's another story).

Seriously, I don't think there is anyway of tracking that, and that's a good thing IMO.  I would say that it's like the hits on a webserver, that's not what you should track anyway, but how many did click on a link or did follow up on the call for action...

Agreed (that’s why I use Mutt, a console email client).

Right, but we can’t take away this option from CiviMail without good reasoning, and ‘it doesn’t fully work most of the time’ is IMHO not good enough (it’s a reason to have a bold red info ‘these stats are most probably underestimates’, though). I’d rather default to not track opens, but keep the option for those who are aware that it’s not surefire and who don’t object to invading their recipients’ privacy.

Maybe a check to include opens might be fine, or better a system installation options.

It is frustrating that the track opens is not accurate, but that's the receiver's option.  However, the tool is somewhat useful.

- gives confirmation that some are being received
- let's us know who is likely at their computer, so sometimes call right then with a follow-up

I have relatively high opening rates, but this may be because I have quite a small list and a very engaged membership:

Delivery Summary
Intended Recipients 233
Succesful Deliveries 233 (100.00%)
Spooled Mails 0
Tracked Opens 96
Click-throughs 100

One 'trick' that I have used with success is to include an image in the email which is of interest to the readers - this encourages them to click on "show images" and therefore enable the webbug

Nice trick.

Do you have a imageless mailing stat with a similar group and could you share if it was way lower than 96 ?

Not a big difference, but 82 without the image
