The Conservation Fund - CiviCRM Critical to Online Donations
September 28, 2007, 10:53:44 am
The Conservation Fund (http://www.conservationfund.org/) is the nation’s foremost environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting America’s most important landscapes and waterways for future generations. The Conservation Fund pioneers a balanced, non-advocacy, non-membership approach to conservation, one that blends environmental and economic goals and objectives.  Their “Go Zero program” was created to calculate and offset the annual carbon dioxide emitted by a specific activity, business, organization or individual.

To satisfy all of the Conservation Fund’s needs, Phase2 Technology (http://www.phase2technology.com/) and Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group (HZDG) (http://www.hzdg.com/) worked together to develop a great new design presence for the new site, which includes an “earthy” color palette incorporating various interactive features and unique navigation methods.  Special attention was made to implementing the Drupal CMS from a unified perspective, incorporating the needs of all of the regional separate program sites into the overall spectrum of website feature offerings.  CiviCRM 1.8 was used to implement the donation engine for the site.  The Conservation Fund collects donations for various programs, so CiviCRM search and exporting capabilities are critical to the success of the organization.

Some highlights of the CiviCRM solution are:
  • The entire Conservation Fund web network, including 7 program sites, comprise over 10 unique CiviCRM contribution types/pages.  The Conservation Fund exposes different pages depending on the various donation campaigns they undertake.
  • Donations taken online can be one time or recurring.
  • Through the Go Zero Carbon Calculator (http://www.conservationfund.org/gozero) donators can calculate their carbon footprint and determine how much to donate in order to offset it.  These type of donations are processed through our custom built web service which utilizes the contribution API to enter donations into the CiviCRM backend.
  • Through the Evan Almighty Forest (http://www.getonboardnow.org/buy_tree.html) donators can purchase a tree in a unique, Flash driven virtual forest for $5.  These types of donations are processed through our custom built web service which utilizes the contribution API to enter donations into the CiviCRM backend.  Read more at http://getonboardnow.org/press.html about how NBC Universal Studios went “green” for the Evan Almighty movie, and Get On Board Now!(http://getonboardnow.org/)
  • All donations are processed through a custom built payment processor which uses PayJunction (http://www.payjunction.com) as the online merchant.  This payment processor has been contributed back to the CiviCRM project and will be available in version 1.9 (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/PayJunction+Configuration).
  • Custom BIRT reports were used to satisfy the Fund’s unique reporting requirements.  These reports will be contributed back to the CiviCRM project soon – stay tuned (http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviReport).
  • CiviCRM profile address data is integrated with Drupal's Ecommerce store (http://drupal.org/project/ecommerce) during the checkout and billing process.
