3.1.2 contact search box has stopped working since upgrade

The search box top left in the black Civicrm menu has stopped working since I upgraded to 3.1.2

It used to display a drop down of search results automatically after typing a few characters in the box; it no longer does this

Using Joomla 1.5.14

Hello there.

We have just upgraded to 3.1.2 and although our search box (top left in the black Civicrm menu) does work on occasion, every few searches, using different search criteria, BUT when you select a client form the list of results of the search, every few times it will pop up with an error message (see attached JPEG).
 ???

The error message above appears if you select one of the drop-down results AND then hit enter before the page loads.
