New to CiviMail

Hi everyone!

Yes, my subject stated that I am new to CiviMail and indeed, I'll be needing anyone's help on this.  :)

I successfully installed civiCRM on my laptop, and next big thing I know I should do is to configure mass mailing of bulletin / newspaper using the civiMail module. I have tried so many times to look for online video tutorials but none of them work. I have also tried reading documents and at this point, still reading it.  ;D

In a way, these help. However, I still cannot make it work.  :'(

Please, can anyone provide me a step by step procedure on how to mass mail newspapers/bulletins?  ???

I would really like to learn civiCRM and will be donating soon!  ;)

Hi. Did you install CiviCRM on your laptop for testing purposes? In order to send mailings you will need to have CiviCRM running on a webserver. So maybe you configured your laptop as a webserver (e.g. Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) and are trying how use CiviMail? If you configure your local webserver correctly and your ISP allows outgoing mail, this should be possible, but typically folks install CiviCRM on a (shared or not) webhost running on a (test) website, for example with Drupal.

If you got these basics covered you should follow the instructions:
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviMail+Installation
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviMail+Admin
http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/CiviMail

These manual pages are also helpful: http://en.flossmanuals.net/CiviCRM/Email.

If this is not what you need, you'll have to be more specific on your setup and the exact problem you want to solve. I'm not aware of specific step-by-step howto's, but the typical setups are covered in the documentation mentioned above.

Technically, to do the "mass email", you do need CiviMail.  However, depending on your circumstances and how many publications you email to, you may also may be able to get by with the "send email to contacts" and a signature line in your email.

Hi Arjan and Denver,

Thank you for all the help. I have already configured everything as stated in the manual. When I try to send a New Mail, its giving me this message:

"To send an email, you must have a valid group of recipient (a mailing lists, or a group who received at least an email previously)"

My main goal is to send a bulletin to a specified group.

I am starting it however, by learning on the basics (configuration settings, sending mail to an individual).

Now I dont know what to do from here.  :'(

Please help, merci!

CiviMail at least in version 1.9, not quite sure about version 3.1.3, but think it works the same way, is always sent to a group.  So just establish a group though manage groups and add people to it or select a few people and create a group and try it again.  This is one of the differences between tags and groups, groups can be used for sending mail.  Oh, also, the group properties must be set to allow mailing.

Then see what happens.

So lady_starter ... did this ever get cleared up for you?

I was also curious as to the answer to Arjan's question about the way you had installed CiviCRM.

Your statement:

could cover a lot of different scenarios. There are three or four different ways to "correctly" install CiviCRM depending on which CiviCRM manual (there a few out on the net) that we are speaking of.
