CiviCRM - Customisation questions

Hi,

I work for a non-profit organisation that operates in 21 countries and is mainly interested in CiviCRM as a donor management system.

I have done an assessment using your test demo and against our documented Requirements and am hoping you can answer a number of questions I have to help us to make a decision.  I have broken my questions into 4 posts to make it easier, hope this helps.  See below, for my customisation questions:

Q. Can you transfer people from one Contribution category to another, whilst keeping their history of when they were in the previous category?

Q. Can you link CiviCRM to an address checking system, i.e. to make sure the address & postcode match?

Q. Customisation of fields – Does the Administer/Customise section of CiviCRM allow you to customise fields for each module of CiviCRM, and for each screen within each module or just certain parts can be customised?  We would particularly want to customise fields for Contact information, Project and Contribution fields and for reporting on them too.

Q. Can you manage drop down lists on your own for any field without having to go to someone to change code?  I can see the Administer/Option lists section but it looks on the test demo to be for certain fields only, like Activities, Tags etc.

Q. How can you create different segments in CiviCRM and channels versus projects and add Contacts to them?  I can see you have the Groups and Tags but I was not sure what they are supposed to be used for.

Q. Donation preferences - Can you customise fields so that you can capture information on what specific types of projects  people have expressed an interest in?

In general, I think CiviCRM handles 80% plus of the requirements as you've summarized them here. A few points of clarification:
* CiviCRM has 'contacts' who make 'contributions'. Contributions are assigned to a contribution type (user controlled list of options). Contacts' history of contributions is always maintained - regardless of the contribution type (category) assigned to any given contribution.

* CiviCRM has a USPS address verification plug-in. However there are significant restrictions on use of this web service (by the USPS) - and your organization may or may not be granted access to it.

* CiviCRM has a 'case' component / record type (for case management) - but no 'Project' record / interface (yet). Custom fields can be configured to extend pretty much any record type.

* Most drop-down lists are editable in the admin UI - including all drop-downs used for custom fields you create.

* Groups (including 'smart groups' based on searches),  tags, and custom fields are all available as 'segmenting' mechanisms. You'll need to investigate these options to determine which one(s) meet your needs.

* You can extend the Contribution record with any number of custom fields to record donor preferences as well as any additional internal data req's.

If you haven't browsed through the online book - Understanding CiviCRM - I'd highly recommend it:
