How inherited membership is updated and granted
March 01, 2010, 04:51:52 pm
I have been having some trouble understanding the inheritance feature. I am trying to use the Head of Household and Household member of to grant a family a membership from a household membership. I may not completely understand why I need to define the relationship type in the membership type, but have selected head of household for. My understanding is I can not allow people to inherit a membership by defining the relationship within the user record with the head of household relationship. When I complete this my family member does not inherit the membership. Does the membership need to be created after the relationship is created? Do I need to run the member upgrade script? Nothing seems to work. Also what is the difference between a head of household and/or Household member of? Would like to use both to clearly define roles within a household membership, but it doesn't seem to work.

Thank you,
Branden

I think you just need to get your Relationship sorted out. If it was an Organisation and the people were Employees then you set the Membership up based on Relationship = Employer of  - ie from the Org end - so the others inherit it.

if you want to do same for Household, then the Membership belongs to H/hold and the 'members of household' inherit it.

If you want Person A to buy Membership and have all people with 'relationship x' to Person A inherit it, then set the relationship up from Person A perspective.

And yes you can create your own custom Relationships eg Person A is 'family contact for' and others are 'family contact is'

I believed that is what I have setup. What I would like is everyone in a Household to inherit. I have setup my membership type as Household with the relationship type Head of household for. I believed any member that is listed as head of household for this household would inherit the membership. Currently this does not occur.

you also need to run the cron script: UpdateMembershipRecord.php on a nightly basis.
