SMTP error on contribution page with "on behalf of" + profile with Groups field

I think this is a bug:

Have CiviCRM configured to use sendmail, with parameters "-i -f". Everything works.
Create a profile asking for e.g. Last name, Email and Group(s) - to allow for newsletter subscriptions.
Include this profile in a contribution page, that has "Allow contributions on behalf of".
If you make a donation without checking the "'I am contributing on behalf of an organization", everything works and a confirmation email is sent.
But if you choose to donate on behalf of an organization, you get the following, and no email is sent:

An error occurred when CiviCRM attempted to send an email (via SMTP). If you received this error after submitting on online contribution or event registration - the transaction was completed, but we were unable to send the email receipt.

The mail library returned the following error message:
Validation failed for: John Doe

This is probably related to a problem in your Outbound Email Settings (Administer CiviCRM » Global Settings » Outbound Email), OR the FROM email address specifically configured for your contribution page or event. Possible causes are:

Your Sendmail path is incorrect.
Your Sendmail argument is incorrect.
The FROM Email Address configured for this feature may not be a valid sender based on your email service provider rules.

I reproduced this on the demo here: http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=5.

I don't know what's happening, but I know:
- SMTP should not be used here, since Sendmail is configured
- And Sendmail is configured correctly
- But I don't see how the FROM email address could be the problem either...

Any clues?

And maybe I shoud add that this does not occur when including for example the standard 'Individual' profile, I guess it's related to the Group(s) field somehow.

And one more update: configuring SMTP gives the same error, although with some different 'Possible causes'
(wrong smtp username, password, machine name, need to use other port than 25, smtp server down). Although for other mailing purposes, the SMTP settings are fully functional...
