CiviMail bounce handling issues
March 04, 2010, 10:05:36 am
I'm having a lot of trouble with getting CiviMail to handle bounces properly, using the CiviMailProcessor.php script.

Previously I was using IMAP2SOAP but then a lot of good e-mail addresses were being put on hold after upgrading CiviCRM so I disabled IMAP2SOAP thinking that it was not compatible with the latest CiviCRM release due to flagging false positives.

So after taking everyone off hold we now, unsurprisingly, get a huge amount of bounces with every mail.

The From: address of our e-mails is the main mailbox address for our organisation (info@domain.org) so having 2,000 bounces in there every time we send an e-mail is a nuisance.

I configured and enabled CiviMailProcessor.php for IMAP initially, and it seemed to copy loads of e-mails into a sub-folder and not marking any as bouncing - it just clogged up the mailbox. So I then enabled it for POP and it moved loads of mails into a directory in the web server, deleting most of them in the process, and still not marking any as bouncing.

So I'm not sure of the best way of doing it. We need the info@ address as the senders address but we want bounces to go to a seperate mailbox.

What configuration do most people use? I seem to have got it all wrong  :'(

If there are bounces in a mailbox and CiviMailProcessor does not processes them, it means that the settings of that account (in the mail accounts screen) need to be updated.

Can you post the settings (you can mask the domain if you wish and skip the password, of course) and post an example bounce VERP address that doesn’t get processed?
If you found the above helpful, please consider helping us in return – you can even steer CiviCRM’s future and help us extend CiviCRM in ways useful to you.

They are two different email addresses: the from and the "hidden" VERP email used to collect the bounces. If you receive the bounces in your from email address, there is something wrong somewhere.

You should set a different address from the bounce, that will be used only for that.

I think I've sorted it (but will find out later today when I send a message out).

Turns out someone before me had set up an e-mail filter to forward almost everything from the catch-all address to the info@ address... that might have something to do with it!
