Custom fields for contacts in groups

I am brand new to CiviCRM and am hoping to get some guidance. We have set up Groups for our contacts, ie Board of Directors, Sales Team, etc. but we want to create Custom Fields for each Group. People haven mentioned Profiles as well--I don't know it they are useful for what we need to do.

So is there a way to create Custom Fields for all Groups as a whole or for each Group? I cannot find how to get to Custom Fields to edit or add. Please walk me through if you can. Thanks so much!
